BN progressives invited to join new coalition

As Gerakan Harapan Baru (GHB) moves to form a new political party, DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang has expressed hope that progressives in BN would join them in a new political coalition too.

He said he hopes that they could transcend political differences to save Malaysia from becoming a ‘failed state’ due to rampant corruption, socio-economic injustices, and lack of good governance.

“I am hoping that there are also progressive political leaders in Umno and BN who can transcend political party differences as the topmost priority in the nation today is undoubtedly to save Malaysia from becoming a failed state because of rampant corruption, socio-economic injustices and the collapse of good governance.

“Can we look forward to a grand get-together of progressive political leaders, regardless of whether in Umno (or) BN, the new coalition to replace Pakatan Rakyat - whether Pakatan Rakyat 2.0, new Pakatan Rakyat, Harapan Rakyat or whatever the name finally decided upon - and progressive forces and individuals in Malaysia with the single great objective to ‘Save Malaysia’ from becoming a failed state?” he said in a statement today.

Lim had previously mooted such a ‘Save Malaysia’ coalition in March, which he said would comprise of MPs from both sides of the political divide to defend constitutionalism and rule of law.

At the time, the Pakatan coalition was falling apart as PAS pushed for the implementation of hudud law in Kelantan.

Lim had also proposed an eight-year roadmap to steer the coalition back on track in May, lamenting that Pakatan is at the brink of disintegration even though Umno is at its weakest ever.

In today’s statement, Lim said his plans have ‘died a stillbirth’, but there is now new hope in the form of the PAS splinter group GHB, which is planning to form a new political party.

“A new coalition of Malaysian progressives is awaiting to be born and DAP will cooperate with all progressive political forces and parties like PKR and (GHB) to form this new political coalition to save Malaysia from becoming a failed state because of rampant corruption, socio-economic injustices and the collapse of good governance in the country,” he said.
