Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar has denied police are investigating Bank Negara governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz under Section 124 of the Penal Code which relates to activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy.

"Not by us," he said when asked on this matter.

Pressed if the police are denying that Zeti was being investigated, Khalid ( photo ) replied: "Yes."

The police chief was asked to comment on an article published on Malaysia Today from a blog which claimed the governor and other Bank Negara officials are being probed by the police special branch under Section 124.

The blog also claimed that a parallel corruption investigation was being carried out.

"The investigation is two-fold but will probe those involved in the direct negotiation of water pump contracts, whereby the Ministry of Education awarded lucrative water contracts to a company that has several directors who are related to Zeti," stated the article.

The Education Ministry was helmed by former deputy premier Muhyiddin Yassin prior to his removal from the Cabinet on Tuesday.

Malaysiakini has emailed the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on this matter and is awaiting their response.

No problem if rally done properly

On another matter, Khalid was asked whether the police will be taking action against polls watchdog Bersih should it persist with its planned rallies at the end of August.

"If it is done properly (under the Peaceful Assembly Act), then it shouldn't be a problem.

"Whether Bersih can do it or not, I'm not so sure.

"But to go to the streets to bring down the prime minister, that is an offence and we won't allow that and we will take action against them," he said.

The polls watchdog will hold rallies in three cities to push for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's resignation plus institutional reforms to prevent prime ministerial corruption.

Beginning at 2pm on Aug 29, the rally is scheduled to end on midnight of Aug 30 - the eve of Merdeka Day.
