Since former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad was trusted to deal with Anwar Ibrahim in 1998, then Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak should be trusted to deal with 1MDB, Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman says.

"InsyaAllah, we will give (Najib) time, just like we gave time to Mahathir to solve the Anwar issue. Why can't we give time to the prime minister to solve the issues we face now?

"There are five more months, so we will wait and see what the prime minister does," Sinar Harian today quotes Ahmad Razif ( photo ) as saying.

Najib has promised to settle 1MDB's debts within the next five months.

The debt-ridden sovereign wealth fund has become a point of contention within Umno, especially after Najib is believed to have axed Muhyiddin Yassin from the cabinet due to his vocal criticism of 1MDB.

Muhyiddin remains the party's deputy president, and many and rallying around him, especially in his home state of Johor, which is also Umno's birthplace.

Ahmad Razif went on to deny the existence of any ‘Team Najib’ or ‘Team Muhyiddin’ within the party, at least not in Terengganu.

While he admitted that the cabinet reshuffle, which saw Muhyiddin replaced with Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, did affect Umno in the state, he said it was not a problem.

Instead, Ahmad Razif said, it was just a process to strengthen the government and that Terengganu Umno remained steadfast with Najib.
