A group of activists have launched a campaign, modelled after the ALS ice bucket challenge, against TNB's plans to acquire 1MDB's power assets.

Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH) Youth wants the public to only pay RM2.60 to TNB for their August and September electricity bills as a sign of protest.

To do so, a person would have to challenge four of their friends to upload their electricy bill online to prove they have completed the act and challenge four more friends to do the same.

Failure to complete the challenge would require participant to purchase a Bersih 4 t-shirt from KLSCAH youth.

Campaign organiser Ng Chong Soon said the campaign was aimed at highlighting plans to bail out ailing 1MDB using TNB, which could result in higher electricity bills for all.

He said that 1MDB had been accused of buying power assets at an inflated price and the public could end up paying for this folly.

"In the end, Putrajaya might allow higher electricity bills to offset this and the public will pay the price," said Ng during the launch of the campaign last night.

Hashtag campaign

Ng said that the public can send a message by temporarily hurting TNB's coffers.

"Regardless of whether your bill is RM300 or RM500, just pay RM2.60. We will tabulate how much this has affected TNB and release the results on Sept 12," said Ng.

After payment, participant must include the "#260 Cent To TNB, Say No To 1MDB" hashtag on their Facebook page to allow organisers to calculate total amount delayed.

For failing to fulfil the challenge, Ng  ( photo ) said, one should help promote the Bersih 4 rally as well as help fund KLSCAH Youth.

The Bersih 4 rally, to be held from Aug 29 to 30, was called following the removal of Abdul Gani Patail as attorney-general and the elevation of four Public Accounts Committee members as either deputy ministers of cabinet minister.

This had severely disrupted ongoing investigations on 1MDB and allegations that Najib had received a staggering RM2.6 billion "donation".
