The newly formed National Revenue Recovery Enforcement Team (NRRET) is not involved in investigations on 1MDB and its related companies, said the attorney-general's chambers.
The attorney-general's chambers also clarified that the NRRET was not a unit but a "rebranding" of the previous special task force that has been in existence since 2011.
"The aims of NRRET remain the same," said the attorney-general's chambers in a statement today.
The goal of NRRET are to curb:
- evasion of custom duties and tax by individuals and corporate bodies:
- smuggling activities;
- misuse of subsidized goods;
- illegal outflow of funds; and
- acts of corruption which result in the abovementioned activities
Apart from the attorney-general's chambers, the NRRET comprise of the police, MACC, Bank Negara, Inland Revenue Board, Customs Department, Domestic Trade Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry and Companies Commission of Malaysia.
"NRRET primarily streamlines and coordinates the integrated multi-agency enforcement actions with regards to the aforementioned issues.
"NRRET is not in any way involved with any investigations involving 1MDB and its related companies," read the statement.
NRRET's predecessor, simply known as a special task force, was established by the previous attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail in 2011.
The objectives and composition of the NRRET appear the same as the special task force.
However, the special task force was involved in investigations related to 1MDB, as early as March this year, up until Abdul Gani was removed on July 27.
