The Abolish ISA Movement (AIM) has invited the Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) to participate in its latest nationwide campaign.

The 'Rid Malaysia of ISA' campaign will be launched at the PAS headquarters in Selangor on Dec 11.

Campaign chairperson and former ISA detainee Saari Sungib handed over the invitation to Suhakam commissioner Siva Subramaniam today.

"It is only right that a large-scale campaign is carried out to support Suhakam's recommendation to the government to abolish the ISA," Saari said, referring to the body's call last year for a comprehensive security law in place of current legislation.

"The campaign takes into account the events under the current political climate, such as (former deputy premier) Anwar's Ibrahim's release, which must be maximised in defending human rights."

He also said Anwar, who was twice detained under the ISA, would play a key role in the campaign, including delivering the keynote address at the launch.

"Our success in campaigning for the release of reformasi detainees ... must be taken to the next level with Anwar and Suhakam as key factors," added Saari.

He said the police have been informed of the event which is expected to draw at least 2,000 members.

Siva advised AIM - an umbrella body for more than 80 NGOs, political parties, unions and student groups - to prevent untoward incidents during the launch.

"The sale of tickets is a good idea as it will help to keep control (of numbers). We don't want pandemonium and hope that the event will be peaceful," said Siva, acknowledging the merits of the campaign.

He referred to the "success" of the unprecedented debate on the ISA between opposition and government leaders in July.

More than a 1,000 people attended the debate which was free of commotion.

Siva said that he would inform Suhakam chairperson Abu Talib Othman of AIM's invitation and a decision on its participation would be made later.
