Pakatan Harapan's alternative budget proposes the extension of Zeti Akhtar Aziz's term as Bank Negara governor by two more years.

It says this will also help to stabilise the economy and the falling ringgit.

"Given the current extraordinary circumstances, we believe a steady hand will be an asset to navigate us through the looming crisis.

"(Zeti's) independence and impartiality in the recent handling of the 1MDB financial scandal demonstrate her professionalism in managing national monetary matters," the alternative budget book adds.

As such, Pakatan Harapan said it would support any move to extend Zeti's term in the central bank.

Zeti's current term as Bank Negara governor is slated to end on April 13 next year.

The appointment of the central bank governor is up to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Kelana Jaya MP Wong Chen ( photo ) said the need to maintain Zeti transcends disagreements she might have with Pakatan.

"There is a bigger picture here. We acknowledge that she is respected worldwide. She is still independent, and we would like to see that maintained," Wong said at the press conference where Pakatan Haparan's alternative budget was presented.

Besides maintaining Zeti as the central bank head, the Pakatan budget also calls for 1MDB to be shut down and placed under maintenance.

Those responsible for the scandal would be persecuted, and efforts would also be made to recover 1MDB's funds overseas.

This is part of efforts to stem corruption which Pakatan Harapan says will save the country RM30 billion.
