"Tian Chua looks tired but he is fine," Tian's father Chua Neo Lai told reporters after visiting his son today for the first time since the latter was detained under the Internal Security Act on April 10.

Tian, a vice-president of opposition party Keadilan, is the sixth ISA detainee to be allowed family visits. Police since April 10 have arrested 10 Keadilan members and reformasi activists under the ISA which allows for detention without trial.

Tian's brother Tian Chien was also allowed to meet him for an hour this afternoon at the Kuala Lumpur Police Contingent Headquarters in Jalan Hang Tuah.

Police had informed Tian's family yesterday that they would be allowed to visit him.

"Tian thanks everybody for their concern. We mostly spoke on family matters," said Chua, adding that his son was still wearing the same clothes he was arrested in.

"Tian Chua said he was kept in solitary confinement but he does not know where he is being detained or what time he was brought to see us. Tian also said that he was given a checkup by a different doctor every week but he is not taking any medication," said Chua.

Tian suffers from asthma.

One book

Chua said his son told him he was not allowed to do any reading initially, but after the 30th day he was given the book Romance of the Three Kingdoms , a well-known Chinese classic.

On further visits, Chua said the police would inform the family when such visits are due.

The other five ISA detainees who have been allowed a single family visit beginning May 3 were Free Anwar Campaign website (Freeanwar.com) webmaster Raja Petra Raja Kamaruddin and Keadilan leaders Dr Badrul Amin Baharom, Mohamad Ezam Mohd Nor, Saari Sungib and Lokman Noor Adam.

The remaining four detainees - Keadilan Youth leaders N Gobalakrishnan and Abdul Ghani Haroon; human rights activist Badaruddin Ismail and social activist-cum- malaysiakini columnist Hishamuddin Rais - have yet to be allowed family visits.
