A group of taxi drivers lodged a police report against another group of drivers who are planning to hold a rally in Kuala Lumpur on Nov 18.

Gabungan Persatuan Teksi Malaysia (GPTM) led by Norfaiza Abdul Ghani expressed their objections against the rally after lodging a report at the Dang Wangi police station.

"We don't support the rally because we prefer to negotiate, compared to those who have chosen to go to the streets.

"We wish to state clearly that a street rally will not bring any benefits, but bad for all taxi drivers.

"The rally will harm the public transport's good name and disrupt the traffic in the city," they said.

A group of taxi drivers had announced a protest named "Revamp Spad rally" to be held on Nov 18 due to their dissatisfaction with Land Public Transport Commission (Spad).

Yesterday, Dang Wangi district police chief ACP Zainol Samah suggested that the rally be held at Padang Merbok instead of Dataran Merdeka.

He said the police proposed the alternative venue to the organiser, Klang Valley taxi drivers action committee, because the rally may disrupt traffic at Dataran Merdeka.

Must obtain permission from DBKL

According to Bernama , Zainol said the rally must obtain permission from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) for the use of Padang Merbok.

"There is no approval given at the moment to the organiser as they have failed to obtain permission from DBKL for the rally," he had said.

Meanwhile, action committee spokesperson Kamarudin Mohd Hussain said they have agreed in principle to police's instruction to the change of venue and will meet this Saturday to decide.

The committee aimed to have 10,000 taxi drivers to join the five-hour protest starting from 12pm to 5pm.

They suggested Jalan Conlay, Masjid Wilayah and Padang Merbok as gathering points at 10am.

The purpose of the rally is to urge for the revamp of Spad and for the government to ban Uber and GrabCar which are seen as affecting the business of taxi drivers.
