DAP said it has successfully managed to ensure good governance in Penang without the need to implement hudud in the state.

DAP parliamentarian Zairil Khir Johari pointed out how the state government practises an open tender system and is free from corruption.

“Penang doesn’t implement hudud, but the working frame of Islamic law is there, and they focus more on the values (of Islamic law).

“They practise an open tender system and they also declare their assets.

“We have managed to do this well and I think this is what Pakatan Harapan wants to offer to the rakyat,” he said.

The Bukit Bendera MP was speaking at the maqasid syariah (goals of syariah) forum at the KL & Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall last night.

Hudud has become an issue since PAS started pushing hudud as its prime agenda over the past year, insisting it is necessary to ensure good governance and fight crime.

‘Political issue, not Islamic’

Meanwhile, Zairil said the DAP does not reject hudud from a religious aspect.

Instead, the party is against the implementation of hudud by PAS as the enactment that the Islamic party had put in place in Kelantan was perceived as “problematic”.

“DAP views hudud as a political issue. DAP does not question hudud, but we question PAS’ way in implementing hudud,” he said.

PAS and DAP had been at loggerheads over the former’s insistence on implementing hudud in its stronghold state despite the common agreement in the former Pakatan Rakyat to put the proposal on the backseat.

DAP’s criticisms of PAS’ move led the PAS syura council to support a decision to sever ties with the former during its muktamar (general assembly) this year, leading to the break up of the coalition.
