To mark the United Nations International Human Rights Day celebrated every Dec 10, the Bar Council’s Committee on Orang Asli Rights (COAR) is hosting a charity dinner to raise funds to aid the community.

Themed “#getAsli” , the biennial event will be held at the Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa at 6.30pm on Tuesday, Dec 8, at Persiaran Lagoon, Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

The organiser hopes the theme would help inspire the people to “get real” and be aware of the difficulties faced by the Orang Asli - the indigenous peoples of Peninsular Malaysia.

Many Orang Asli groups live without the basic necessities and rights that other Malaysians often take for granted.

Proceeds from the event will fund activities by the committee to assist with community development and upliftment, non-formal education of women and children and leadership training.

In addition, COAR wants to assist the Orang Asli community in securing their livelihood and strengthening their traditional culture.

The event will showcase live performances by the Orang Asli to introduce their culture and heritage to the public, along with a video presentation on Malaysia’s indigenous communities.

The event will also hold an auction of at least three pieces of artwork from top local artists.

Zunar, who recently won the Committee to Protect Journalists’ International Press Freedom Award, has agreed to auction off one of his artworks.

The famous cartoonist, whose real name is Zulkiflee SM Anwar Ulhaque, will demonstrate his drawing skills at the dinner.

RM250 per head

The committee is also selling #getAsli badges at RM3 each, and T-shirts at RM20 for round neck and RM25 for v-neck each, as part of its fund-raising mission for the Orang Asli.

Tickets for the charity dinner cost RM250 each or RM2,500 for a table. Allianz Insurance has stepped in as the main donor of the event.

Malaysian Bar president Steven Thiru is slated to deliver the opening speech at the event.

Those interested to attend the event can contact Bar Council staff Najwa Hamid (03-2050 2102 or [email protected]) or Mohd Faizal Mahat (03-2050 2088 or [email protected]).

Members of the public who would like to donate to the Committee on Orang Asli Rights can do so through the designated Hong Leong Bank account 00200756927, or write a cheque payable to the ‘Malaysian Bar COAR Account’.
