Kini Roundup: Guan Eng ejected from House, Dr M sues Najib

Here’s a recap of major headlines yesterday you may have missed.

Mahathir drags Najib to court

Ex-premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad and two others have filed a legal suit against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak for breach of fiduciary duty and misfeasance in public office at the Kuala Lumpur High Court.

While some such as federal minister Azalina Othman Said was shocked by the action, others argued that it was the ex-PM's right to do so.

Minister of Communications and Multimedia Salleh Said Keruak had described Mahathir as desperate, saying he was " clutching at straws ".

Najib’s wife Rosmah Mansor may be subpoenaed . Lawyer Mohd Haniff Khatri Abdulla, who is representing the plaintiffs, did not discount the possibility of summoning her, Salleh as well as Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed.

Lawyers for Dr M said that they are looking at all angles and will not discount summoning the PM's wife to the witness stand.

Lim booted from House

A verbal altercation over the word "bohong" with federal minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan which went on for an hour in Parliament saw Lim Guan Eng (DAP-Bagan) getting the boot from the House.

Lim had returned to Parliament after leaving earlier for an appointment. He told reporters that he didn't flee as alleged and was back to confront Rahman, who was rounding up for his ministry.

The Penang CM had refused to step down over Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission probe into his purchase of a bungalow on Pinhorn Road, allegedly for far below market price.

The MACC had asked that the CM to come to its office to expedite the probe given that Lim had promised his full cooperation.

Bank Negara to take action against 1MDB

Bank Negara governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz said that the central bank will take action against 1MDB for ignoring instruction to submit its evidence that the troubled sovereign fund was unable to repatriate US$1.83 billion parked overseas.

She also denied that she was forced to retire due to political pressure, stressing that "there are no hidden hands" in her decision to step down on April 30.

Zeti added that she will not let herself and the central bank be drawn into the current political feud in the nation, when asked about former deputy premier Muhyiddin Yassin referring to her in a Malaysiakini interview .

Other Kini bites

The Johor crown prince recalls the 'dark history' of the 1992 constitutional crisis under then premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, advising the present government not to repeat the incident.

At the same time, his father, the Johor sultan, mulls replacing the Causeway with a bridge, after noting with concern the traffic jams that thousands of Johoreans and Singaporeans had to endure each day.

Meanwhile, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia was furious with reporters for 'ambushing' non-MPs in the Parliament lobby, reminding all that only MPs can give press conferences at the venue.

Looking ahead

The amendments to the National Security Council Act will be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat today.

The Shah Alam High Court will be handing down its decision in the Aminulrasyid Amzah civil suit.

14-year-old schoolboy Aminulrasyid was shot dead by the police in 2010. Police corporal Jenain Subi was subsequently acquitted by the courts despite evidence showing that he discharged his pistol 21 times.

Following this, Aminulrasyid’s mother, Norsiah Mohammad, 66, and his eldest sister, Nor Azura Amzah, 45, filed a law suit against Jenain, the police and the government.
