Attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali today said he has called for further investigations into state investment arm 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

“On 1MDB, I have already directed further investigations in respect of other personalities that might be involved and I have yet to receive the investigation papers (IPs) pertaining to that directive.

“Up till now they have not come back (to me),” Apandi told reporters in Kuala Lumpur today.

The attorney-general had earlier given a talk to media practitioners and academicians.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in its report released earlier this month had recommended that the authorities investigate former 1MDB chief executive officer Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi as well as the parties linked to the management of the government-owned strategic investment company.

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar subsequently announced a police investigation team for 1MDB to scrutinise the PAC report.

Khalid said the outcome would then be presented to the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

Yet to see the IPs on Mahathir

Meanwhile, Apandi said he has yet to see the IPs with regard to former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

On Khalid, who had said that police were awaiting the attorney-general’s decision on the four IPs, which also include one on sedition, Apandi pointed out how there were various departments under the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

“There is the prosecution department under me, they may have sent (the IPs) to my officers at the prosecution department.

“They (the officers) have to study, and in the final analysis if they want to make any decision, they will then refer to me. Up until now they have yet to refer to me,” he said.

Apandi was also not in the know when asked about Malaysiakini journalist Kow Gah Chie who is being investigated under Section 505(c) of the Penal Code.

“I don't know. I cannot claim to know everything, you know.

“Whatever it is, the attorney-general, as public prosecutor, will only know when they refer the papers to me or to my officers, with the view to prosecute or otherwise. Until now I don’t know,” he said.

Kow is being investigated under Section 505(c) of the Penal Code, which deals with making, publishing and circulating statements with intent to incite a community to commit an offence.

The journalist had, in her report, quoted incumbent Nangka assemblyperson Dr Annuar Rapaee as saying that Muslims in Sarawak should not squander the opportunity to lead majority in the state.

When approached later, Annuar denied he was using the race and religious card.
