On campaigning for PAS, aide claims Khalid wanted to return favour

S'WAK POLLS Former Selangor menteri besar Khalid Ibrahim is helping PAS campaign in the Sarawak polls in order to return a favour, his aide said.

However, she said that Khalid's presence in Bintulu had nothing to do with him joining PAS.

"He just wanted to return the favour.

"PAS election workers had helped him tremendously for his seats in Bandar Tun Razak and Port Klang during the last general election," she told Malaysiakini on condition that she not be named.

Furthermore, she said, Khalid had filed a complaint with the Registrar of Societies (ROS) following his expulsion from PKR.

Since the ROS has yet to make an official decision on the matter, it would not be proper for Khalid to join any other political party.

Khalid resigned from his post as Selangor menteri besar on Aug 26, 2014.

His decision came after continuous pressure for him to vacate his post. His former party had then decided to replace him with PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, but Khalid insisted on staying his full term as menteri besar.

He was subsequently expelled from the party.

However, instead of Wan Azizah, PKR deputy president Azmin Ali became the new menteri besar.

Tongues started wagging when photographs of Khalid meeting people at a market in Bintulu, together with those from the PAS election machinery, emerged.

Sarawak PAS also published the photos on its Facebook page.

The Samalaju state seat in Bintulu is seeing a four-cornered tussle among PAS candidate Zharudin Narudin, BN’s Majang Renggie, DAP’s Baba Emperan and independent candidate Michael Lias.

Samalaju is among the 11 newest seats carved out in the recent Sarawak electoral constituency re-delineation exercise.
