The PAS Ulama Wing has urged its members to approach the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community and guide them towards Islam.

The wing's chief Mahfodz Mohamed said the move is necessary following what was seen as the rampant destruction of moral values and thoughts going on now.

In fact, Mahfodz also condemned the move by the DAP Penang state government to become the first state that recognises LGBTs through the setting-up of the transgender committee.

"PAS Ulama Wing condemns all support for the culture of this community.

"Therefore, we must approach all communities, including the LGBT, so that they can be together with PAS and receive a real understanding of Islam. This could then lead them to Islam as a way of life, that can save them while on earth and in the hereafter," he stressed.

The Penang transgender committee held its first meeting on May 17 after seven years of lobbying to set it up.

The committee is chaired by DAP Tanjung Bungah assemblyperson Teh Yee Cheu.

Mahfodz, meanwhile, also urged all Muslim scholars to guide the people so that they can understand the Al-Quran and the real meaning of Islam.

He said what is understood by the people now is mostly Islam as a religion, but not based on what is directly stated in the Quran.

Mahfodz said this in his speech during the 65th annual PAS Ulama Wing Muktamar at Tok Bali, Kelantan, last night.

Also present was PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad.
