A PKR Youth leader and popular preacher has lodged a police report against Pahang mufti Abdul Rahman Osman over the latter's proclamation of DAP as 'kafir harbi'.

Lodging the report at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur at 11.45am today, PKR Youth's religious bureau chief Wan Ji Wan Hussin said the mufti's statement is a serious matter that warrants police attention.

"This police report is made considering the matter is too serious, and we ask that elements that call for the spilling of blood be avoided.

"This country has many different races, different religions and political beliefs, there is no need to make statements that can stir religious sentiment, which can cause people to spill blood," Wan Ji (photo) told reporters outside the police station.

"Therefore the police should view this seriously," he said, adding that recent threats by the terrorist group Islamic State (IS) at home make the mufti's statement all the more worrying.

Last Friday the mufti was reported by Utusan Malaysia calling DAP 'kafir harbi' for opposing PAS' move to implement hudud in Kelantan, painting the party as anti-Islam.

The term for non-Muslims who wage war against Islam implies that those so labelled can be killed.

PKR central committee member Latheefa Koya last Saturday called the statement dangerous and irresponsible, and slammed the prime minister for his silence on the mufti's actions as it opened the door to potential violence.

PKR senator Muhammad Nur Manuty called the statement a "desperate" and "cheap political propaganda tool" by the ruling party.

'Other muftis should speak up'

Wan Ji said the mufti could have erred in his understanding of the political issues at hand, but said such an incident should not happen as political differences should be handled in a peaceful manner.

"He should not act in a manner that invites elements of violence," said Wan Ji.

"Because we can see the IS in Syria and Iraq. They too accuse others who have differing religious beliefs as enemies of Islam," he said, adding that this has led to vengeance and conflict.

Wan Ji urged the other mufti in the country to condemn Rahman's declaration, saying they should emulate Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin .

"Earlier, the Perlis mufti said such a statement or accusation is unnecessary, and we hope not just the Perlis mufti but others too will take the same steps, to say that such an accusation should not occur in Malaysia," the ustaz added.
