M'sia reacts to Guan Eng's prosecution; Penang CM to stay put

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines from yesterday you may have missed, in brief.

Defiant CM denies corruption charges

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng was charged for abuse of power and corruption while businesswoman Phang Li Koon was charged for abetting him.

A defiant Guan Eng denied the charges and vowed to soldier on.

Penang DAP urged supporters to donate RM10 each after having to pay Guan Eng's whopping RM1 million bail.

Civil society groups criticised the swift action against Guan Eng when there had been no prosecution over the 1MDB scandal.

Meanwhile, Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak blasted The Wall Street Journal for linking Lim's arrest to his criticism of the 1MDB scandal.

Guan Eng's father Lim Kit Siang, who is also DAP parliamentary leader, said his son's prosecution was an outcome of an emboldened BN after scoring victories in the Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar by-elections.

'No leave, no resignation'

Following the charges against Guan Eng, BN leaders immediately demanded that he either resign or go on leave pending trial, which may take a couple of years.

MCA president Liow Tiong Lai said the people are now watching Guan Eng on whether he practices what he preaches with regards to going on leave.

Guan Eng said he will leave his position as Penang chief minister to his party to decide.

Following an emergency Penang, the state DAP said there was no need for Guan Eng to resign or quit.

Opposition do some navel-gazing

Guan Eng's arrest and prosecution led to some introspection in the opposition, with PKR deputy president Azmin Ali declaring Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak having crossed the line.

As such, he urged the opposition to close ranks and come together.

Meanwhile, in retrospect, PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli said the opposition made the mistake of becoming too preoccupied with seizing Putrajaya instead of building a solid foundation.
