Singapore and Malaysia to sign MOU on High-Speed Rail on July 19

Singapore and Malaysia will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the High-Speed Rail (HSR) project linking Kuala Lumpur with Singapore next Tuesday, Channel NewsAsia reported.

“We are working towards signing the MOU on July 19, 2016. We are still in the process of confirming the details,” a spokesperson from Singapore’s Ministry of Transport was quoted as saying.

The spokesperson said the ceremony would be witnessed by Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his counterpart Najib Abdul Razak, who is set to host the event at Seri Perdana, Putrajaya.

Japan, South Korea and China are among countries that have shown keen interest to take part in the proposed 350km HSR line project.

They are not only interested in bidding for the project but also to work together and share their expertise and technology in HSR network.

The line will begin in Bandar Malaysia, 7km from the Kuala Lumpur city centre, and end in Jurong East, Singapore.

The HSR is expected to have five transit stations, namely Seremban, Ayer Keroh, Muar, Batu Pahat and Iskandar Puteri.

It is expected to cut travel time to 90 minutes from five hours by an expressway between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
