Jailed former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim today expressed his sympathy for Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng who is allegedly facing political persecution over two corruption charges.

"I express my sympathy for him (Lim). If in Penang there are ongoing discussions on their future, let them discuss it.

"Let them discuss whether to hold snap polls or otherwise," he told Malaysiakini when met outside the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur.

Anwar, who later testified as a witness in PKR vice-president Tian Chua's ongoing sedition trial, said this when asked to comment on speculation of a possible snap election in Penang.

Tian Chua later told reporters that PKR fully supported DAP, especially at a time when Lim is being investigated for corruption.

"As for the snap polls, we want further discussion, so that if it happens, we will be solidly behind them.

"Currently we are discussing and want further clarification from DAP on how to face the polls together," he added.

The Batu MP however said it was premature to speculate on the outcome of the polls, or its impact on Pakatan Harapan.

Asked to comment on an alleged decision by the DAP to call for an early election, Tian Chua said: "The decision must be made jointly. Not by DAP alone, but everyone (Harapan) together.

"We (PKR) need some clarification because we want to work out the details before we make a decision."

PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali is expected to meet with Lim in Penang this afternoon.
