Polls reform group Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah has confirmed that a rally is on the cards, following recent developments in the United States concerning 1MDB.

Maria today was asked whether another rally is being planned following lawsuits filed by the US's Department of Justice (DOJ) to seize assets bought with funds allegedly siphoned from 1MDB.

She agreed that now was an apt time for another rally but said the election watchdog group was in the process of discussion.

“Bersih’s process is that we have to consult the NGOs before we actually make any decision.

“So that is definitely an agenda on the table,” Maria said.

Bersih’s most recent rally, the Bersih 4.0, attracted tens of thousands of people who had gathered in the city centre.

In the 34-hour rally held on Aug 29 and 30 last year, the people had demanded for clean and fair elections, among others.

Meanwhile, asked whether Bersih would work with former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad on the rally, she said he was free to do so.

“He can join our rally if he agrees with our reform.

“That will still be the consistent stand that Bersih takes,” Maria added.

Yesterday, Mahathir had suggested that Malaysians hold a peaceful rally to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

The US Department of Justice said that US$731 million was allegedly siphoned from 1MDB into a bank account owned by the unnamed 'Malaysian Official 1'.

The department's description of Malaysian Official 1 in its court documents has sparked speculation that it refers to Najib.
