The Umno supreme council, which met last week, did not discuss the “Malaysian Official 1" mentioned in the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) court filings against the alleged abuse of 1MDB funds, according to Kinabatangan MP Bung Moktar Radin.

However, he said the issue of the court filings was raised during the meeting.

"We did not discuss it because nobody knew who ‘MO1' was," he told Malaysiakini.

"DOJ did not name the person, so it is difficult to predict (who the person is)," he added.

After chairing the meeting, Najib had told reporters that the council had taken note of the so-called “Malaysian Official 1", who was mentioned 36 times in the court filings.

Though the court filings did not name the official, the opposition and other quarters have argued there is sufficient information to indicate that it was the prime minister.

Responding to this, Bung said: "Yeah, they can pinpoint Najib, but since the name wasn't there, ‘MO1' can be anybody, can be you or me... It (MO1) can be nobody too," he added.

"Najib is a good person, I like him and I will support him," he said.

"It is not an issue. It is not a big deal," he stressed.

Bung, who is a supreme council member, said the DOJ suits were discussed in brief during the last meeting.

He said the supreme council members decided that those mentioned in the court filings should clear their names through the US justice system.

"We are seriously concerned about (DOJ's suits). We, the MT (supreme council) and Malaysian government support and will cooperate with DOJ," he added.

Meanwhile, Bung also saw a silver lining with regard to the US slated to return the funds allegedly misappropriated from 1MDB.

"If these people want to give you money for nothing, you welcome them," he said.

US federal prosecutors filed the civil lawsuits seeking to seize assets worth more than US$1 billion, allegedly stolen from 1MDB.

The DOJ named Najib's stepson Riza Aziz, the founder of Red Granite Pictures, Malaysian financier Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, Abu Dhabi government officials Khadem Abdulla Al-Qubaisi and Mohammed Ahmed Badawy Al-Husseiny.

Both Al Qubaisi and Al-Husseiny are former officials at a sovereign fund in Abu Dhabi that participated in deals with 1MDB.

The DOJ court papers stated that “Malaysian Official 1' received US$731 million in kickbacks, allegedly from 1MDB funds.

Najib has denied abusing public funds for personal gain, and blamed such allegations on those conspiring to topple him.

Attorney-general Mohamad Apandi Ali had also cleared the prime minister of any wrongdoing.

1MDB is the brainchild of Najib, who served as the chairperson of its board of advisers.

The Finance Ministry, which the prime minister oversees, is the sole shareholder of the investment fund.
