Persatuan Seniman Malaysia (Seniman) wants the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to close the YouTube account of controversial rapper Wee Meng Chee over his latest music video.

Its president, actor Zed Zaidi, said Wee, better known as Namewee, had tried to undermine the country’s unity and harmony with his video titled ‘Oh My God’.

“The video clip defiled Islam,” Zed told a press conference at the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia’s (Finas) headquarters in Ampang last night.

Pointing out how Namewee had previously come out with other sensitive video clips such as ‘Negarakuku’ and the film ‘Banglasia’, Zed said Seniman had lost its patience with the rapper.

“To the MCMC, just close Namewee’s YouTube (account) because he has undermined the country’s unity and harmony.

“He has tarnished our image nationwide through YouTube,” he added.

During the press conference, a letter of protest was submitted to Jamawi Ja’afar, senior special officer to Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak, urging him to take action against Namewee through the MCMC.

Promising that the letter of protest will be forwarded to Salleh, Jamawi said the minister was already aware of the matter, based on reports that were lodged by other quarters.

“We will take action based on the existing laws,” he said.

Meanwhile, Seniman secretary-general Hafiz Nafiah confirmed that a police report was lodged on behalf of the artistes association at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters yesterday.

“In the report, I stated Seniman’s stand in that we do not support this; we view this issue very seriously,” he said.

Commenting on the scenes depicting one of the singers wearing ‘Muslim’ apparel and holding a machine gun, Hafiz questioned Namewee’s intention in showcasing such a character.

“What are you trying to say, that Muslims are terrorists?

“Also, the scenes showing dancing in a mosque - Muslims don’t do such a thing and yet you enter a mosque and you can even dance? We just can’t accept that,” he said.

The four-minute video was allegedly shot at the Tanjung Bungah mosque in Penang and several other places of worship of other religions.

Penang police chief Abdul Ghafar Rajab said that police had initiated investigation in relation to the music video under Section 295 of the Penal Code for defiling a place of worship with the intent of insulting a religion.

The police had opened an investigation paper following police reports lodged by several NGOs over the matter.

Penang Northeast District police chief Mior Farid Alatrash Wahid reportedly said that Namewee, who is believed to be overseas, would be arrested to facilitate investigations into the music video.
