Cheers filled the air for Malaysian mixed double pair Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying despite their heartbreaking loss.

"The result I think is as good as a young team, regardless win or lose," said Alvin Teh, 26, a progamme director.

"Although we hoped it would be a gold, but as what we have we are happy with it," Teh added.

The pair went down 21-14, 21-12 to Indonesian pair Liliyana Nasir and Tontowi Ahmad in the finals early this morning.

Although the gold medal remains elusive for Malaysia, Chan and Goh clinched Malaysia's second silver medal in the Rio Olympic Games 2016.

Hundreds of people came to Putrajaya Square last night to watch the mixed doubles final.

The event at the square from Aug 17 to 19 is organised by the Youth and Sports Ministry, and features food trucks and various performances.

The supporters waved small Malaysian flags while fixing their gaze on the large screen in front of them.

Teh is also very proud of the clean and friendly environment provided.

"It is pretty nice to have such a big screen to do it with the other Malaysians. There are not a lot of interactions but I think it is nice to have this family feeling kind of thing," he said.

"There was some disappointment, of course, but we respect the team," said Muhammad Azman, 24 (photo), a student.

There were also others urging Goh to continue fighting in badminton.

"Liu Ying, please don't retire. Try the next Olympics, maybe you will win the gold,"' interjected Azman's girlfriend.

For some, the achievements of Chan and Goh have been more than what they had expected.

"We targeted one medal in Olympics, from Lee Chong Wei, but then our men's doubles and mixed doubles are entering final. It is already something good," said Yusof Md Noh, 34, civil servant.

"'Even though it is just a silver, but it is okay," Yusof said.
