Tangkap MO1 rally to go ahead at Dataran despite police’s no-no

The planned #TangkapMalaysianOfficial1 rally will go ahead at its proposed venue Dataran Merdeka, this despite the police stating that the rally will not be allowed to be held there.

Group spokesperson Anis Syafiqah Md Yusof said they were not shocked and had in fact expected that inspector-general of police (IGP) Khalid Abu Bakar would give such a response.

“The IGP has passed judgment on the rakyat’s right to assemble peacefully, even before the rally is held. This is a violation of our constitutional right.

“We, the youths, are determined to continue with the #TangkapMO1 rally this Aug 27 at Dataran Merdeka,” said Anis in a statement.

Khalid yesterday said that police will not allow the rally to be held in Dataran Merdeka as the organiser did not get permission from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).

DBKL had said that it would not approve the rally organiser’s request to gather at Dataran Merdeka, proposing that the demonstration be held at Padang Merbok instead.

Meanwhile, Anis questioned whether Putrajaya would allow for the rally to be held in front of the Prime Minister’s Department.

“Of course not. Using the reason that the rally would not be allowed to go ahead due to us failing to obtain permission from the venue’s owner is nothing but an excuse to ban public assemblies forever,” she added.

Anis then expressed hope that the police would give their cooperation to ensure that the rally would go on smoothly.

“And we, too, will give our full cooperation to the police to make this rally a success,”

The #TangkapMO1 rally follows the US Department of Justice's damning revelations that US$3.5 billion had been stolen from 1MDB.

Of this amount, the DOJ claimed US$731 million made its way into the accounts of Malaysian Official 1 (MO1), an unnamed civil servant who is related to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s stepson Riza Aziz.

Critics said that MO1 is none other than Najib himself. However, Najib has denied allegations of misusing public funds, saying such accusations were part of a plot to topple him.
