Register to vote, future is in your hands, Wan Azizah tells youth

Parliamentary Opposition Leader Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has urged the country's youth to register to vote, amid speculation that the next general election is coming soon.

"Come on youth, don't waste time and opportunity! Register as voters. The country's future is in your hands!" Wan Azizah said in her Malaysia Day message today.

Previously, Bloomberg quoted two unnamed Umno division chiefs as saying that the election could be held as early as March next year.

The election is not due until mid-2018, and some speculate that the early election is meant to catch opposition parties while they are still in disarray following the break-up of the Pakatan Rakyat coalition last year.

Opposition parties have also raised concerns that the Election Commission's constituency redelineation exercise will give BN an unfair advantage over them, by manipulating electoral boundaries.

"It clearly benefits Umno-BN, in an effort to run down the spirit of democracy and the principles of justice in elections," Wan Azizah said, urging voters to object to the EC's proposal.

Objections to the redelineation exercise can be made within one month of the proposal being published.
