Attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali and his office see a boost of about RM3 million in the 2017 federal budget, despite the Attorney-General’s Chambers suffering a budget cut.

This will be to pay the salary of 57 people in Apandi’s office.

According to the federal estimated expenditure report, the allocation for the item ‘AG’s services’ rose from RM6.17 million to RM9.19 million.

There is also an additional RM1.62 million allocated for the service of advisers.

The Attorney-General’s Chambers however is to suffer a cut of RM31.07 million, the report states.

The bulk of the cuts from management expenses, which was halved to about RM30 million while the budget for reviewing existing legislation was also cut by RM208,000.

Separately, the National Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) also saw an improvement in allocation, having suffered massive cutbacks in 2016.

The commission will receive RM10.12 million, up from RM5 million in 2016. Its budget was halved in 2016.

However, the government agreed to review the budget cut following complaints from Suhakam.

The Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) also received additional allocation RM2.2 million, up from RM4.8 million in 2016.
