Trump wins; Bersih contends cops given notice; Rafizi sees another SRC in ECRL

KINI ROUNDUP Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Trump elected US president

Donald Trump's successful campaign for the White House broke every tradition and upended the political establishment with the same bluster, hyperbole and media mastery that made him one of the world's best-known businessmen.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak said Trump's victory showed that voters cannot be taken for granted as sentiments trump polls and opinions of experts.

An opposition parliamentarian worries that the rise of Trump and his race-baiting campaign, which led to a stunning victory in yesterday’s US presidential election, will embolden and reinforce the same practice back home in Malaysia.

Experts believe that Trump will be America-centric and trade protectionist, which will cause issues for small economies, like Malaysia, that depend on the US market and spell the end of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) mega trade pact.

However, International Trade and Industry Minister Mustapa Mohamed said Trump's anti-TPPA could just be campaign rhetoric, which would not materialise once he is sworn in as president.

Police given notice, Bersih contends

Former Bersih chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan disputed inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar's statement on Tuesday that no proper notice was given to hold the Bersih 5 rally outside Dataran Merdeka, noting that details and a map of the rally were handed over to the police last week.

The United Nations Human Rights Office of South-East Asia has urged the Malaysian government to respect internationally recognised right to freedom of assembly that it has ratified, and to cease and investigate all harassment against Bersih.

Silat Gayung Pusaka Malaysia guru Majid Mat Isa has condemned those who performed a martial arts display at the protest by anti-Bersih red-shirts against Malaysiakini last Saturday.

"They are ill-bred people who are trying to take advantage of the situation," Majid said.

Selangor PAS said the decision to hold its rally a week ahead of Bersih 5, dubbed the Himpunan Ledakan Suara Rakyat (Lasak), was not meant to "challenge" Bersih, but is merely a coincidence.

In ECRL Rafizi sees another SRC

Putrajaya's decision to use an RM2 company it does not directly own to sign the East Coast Rail Link deal has led to PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli evoking bad memories of SRC International Sdn Bhd's loan troubles.

The flurry of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Malaysia is mostly linked to 1MDB and its failures, and this is not good news for the country said Rafizi, refuting federal minister Noh Omar's claim yesterday that the influx of FDI in Malaysia showed the 1MDB fiasco was a thing of the past.

More Kinibites

The Shah Alam Sessions Court acquitted former Port Klang Authority (PKA) general manager OC Phang on Tuesday, almost seven years after she was charged with three counts of criminal breach of trust over payments worth RM254.85 million in relation to the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) project.

Journalist Rachel Pannett of The Wall Street Journal was ejected from an briefing session on 1MDB in Sydney because she "gate crashed" the event, said programme moderator Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz.

Leading a student demonstration in front of Parliament House, student activist Anis Syafiqah Md Yusof said yesterday there are no guarantees that public universities under pressure from budget cuts could raise enough funds to sustain their own operations, which could lead to problems.

Looking ahead

Najib will launch the Konvensyen Nasional Penyatuan Bangsa 2016 at Universiti Teknologi Mara in Shah Alam today.
