Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) pro-tem president Muhyiddin Yassin has confirmed that a memorandum of understanding between his party and PAS is in the works.

Muhyiddin today was asked whether Bersatu’s agreement with Pakatan Harapan will be made together along with PAS.

As a new party, Muhyiddin said Bersatu would like to engage with all parties.

“Since PAS has indicated its willingness to discuss with us, especially with regard to the next general election, to agree on broad terms of reference - like contesting on a one-to-one basis so that we can get the support of the people.

“It is progressing well, we had our first meeting. We are waiting for the next indication when we can sit down again before we could sort of sign some form of MOU,” he told reporters in a press conference after the conclusion of the Pakatan Harapan Convention today.

Muhyiddin, however, denied that Bersatu’s agreement with Pakatan Harapan, which was expected to be signed today, was delayed due to the party’s discussions with PAS.

“It’s not because of that. (The signing of the agreement was postponed) to give a chance to the Bersatu leadership to have its first meeting with the Pakatan Harapan leadership.”

Although he has had meetings with leaders such as PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Bersatu’s supreme council members have not had the chance to do so.

“So it’s proper to tell them first and then obtain a date to meet the Harapan leadership,” he said.

Muhyiddin had earlier declined that he was backing out from signing the agreement.

The former deputy prime minister said that he had asked for the signing ceremony to be delayed to provide more time for top Bersatu and Harapan leaders to discuss the agreement further.
