A month after Indian national Ilayarajah died under mysterious circumstances, Parti Keadilan Rakyat Youth has asked the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) to uncover the facts.

Deputy Youth head S Manikavasagam submitted a memorandum to commissioner Siva Subramaniam at the Suhakam office in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.

"We request assistance from Suhakam because we have no confidence in the police investigation which has elements of a cover up," Manikavasagam alleged.

Siva described Ilayarajah's death as "strange" and pledged immediate action to look into any human rights violation.

He also said he would meet with Petaling Jaya OCPD Mohd Hazam Abdul Halim who is investigating the case and Ilayarajah's former employer to gather more details.

Ruling out foul play, the police had claimed that restaurant worker Ilayarajah, 20, committed suicide on April 25 after a failed kidnap attempt. He is said to have plunged 14 floors to his death at an apartment block in Damansara Damai.

Outstanding salary

Media reports had speculatively linked the Indian national with the kidnapping of his former employer's 10-year-old son, for a ransom of RM2,300.

However, a witness who declined to be named, said in a sworn statement to police that Ilayarajah could have demanded the money in settlement of outstanding salary.

Manikavasagam lodged a police report at the Petaling Jaya police headquarters on April 29, accusing investigators of hiding the facts.

He also met with representatives of the Indian High Commission last month to discuss this matter, but said there has been no response as yet.

Manikavasagam, quoting from the May 3 edition of Tamil Nesan , said Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Selvi Jayalalitha has asked the Malaysian government to send back Ilayarajah's remains and that she would bear the costs.

He also said he had checked with the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre mortuary this afternoon and that the body has yet to be claimed.
