Batu MP Tian Chua has urged YTL Land and Development Bhd to fulfill the promise to provide housing for those evicted from Kampung Railway before fully acquiring Sentul Raya Sdn Bhd from Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB).

Kampung Railway, which sits on KTMB land, was inhabited by rail workers since prior to 1957, but their descendants were asked to vacate the land which has been earmarked for development.

Some 120 families were promised low-cost housing following their eviction in 2013 from the land which is jointly-owned by KTMB and YTL Land through Sentul Raya Sdn Bhd.

However, Chua pointed out that this has yet to materialise.

"The eviction was done three years ago, but since then development of the proposed low-cost apartments have yet to begin.

"The initial agreement would see Sentul Raya Sdn Bhd complete their development for the low-cost housing by this month.

"YTL has a social responsibility to fulfill their promise to Kampung Railway residents and KTM staff," he said in a statement today.

For now, the former Kampung Railway residents are placed at various People's Housing Projects (PPR) by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).

Sentul Raya Sdn Bhd is 70-percent owned by YTL Land and 30 percent owned by KTMB.

However, YTL Land proposed to acquire the remaining 30 percent stake from KTMB last week, to assume full control of the company's business direction.

Chua also urged Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai to look into the matter.

He questioned if it would in the best interest of the Transport Ministry to let KTMB sell its 30 percent stake in Sentul Raya Sdn Bhd.

"An acquisition like this will no longer give the government a say within the company, and to speak out for the greater benefit of the residents," he said.
