Girl drowns after slipping into canal at Pasir Mas

An eight-year-old girl drowned when she slipped and fell into a canal at Kampung Bemban, Kangkong in Pasir Mas yesterday.

Pasir Mas district police chief ACP Ibrahim Saad said in the 4.45pm incident, Aumuni Abdul Rahman, 8, was observing the canal water with her mother, Zarina Seman, 35, when she slipped.

"Panic-stricken, her mother immediately sought the help of residents to rescue her daughter. The victim was found drowned near the scene," he said when contacted in Pasir Mas today.

He said the body was sent to the Pasir Mas Hospital for post-mortem.

Meanwhile, in Tumpat, a search operation is still ongoing for a fourteen-year-old boy who is feared drowned after falling into Sungai Kelantan in Kampung Laut yesterday.

Tumpat Fire and Rescue Department chief Wan Baijuri Wan Hassan, said they were alerted on the missing teenager Wan Rostam Danaeil Wan Roszan at 5.45pm yesterday.

He said apart from the Fire and Rescue Department, the Royal Malaysian Police, Civil Defence Force, Volunteer Department (Rela) and Kampung Laut Fishermen's Association were involved in the search operation.
