Another circumcision mishap, Health Ministry issues warning

Another botched circumcision has resulted in a 10-year-old seeking professional medical help, the Health Ministry said today.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the boy underwent circumcision at a surau near his home on Nov 25 and sustained injuries to his penis shaft.

This caused blood and urine to leak from the penis.

He was admitted to Hospital Selayang two days later but corrective surgery was not administered because the boy's parents decided to seek treatment at a private hospital, said Noor Hisham.

"The Health Ministry is conducting further investigation over this case," he said.

He warned all circumcision practitioners that they will be held responsible if any mishaps occur.

"As stated before, circumcision is a simple procedure but complications could lead to severe damage to patients.

"All health practitioners conducting this procedure must ensure they have sufficient experience and competency, and must bear responsibility for the complications that occur," he said in a statement.

Two boys were earlier reported to have lost part of their penises in botched circumcisions. Reattachment surgery was successful in one case.
