Newly-appointed auditor-general Madinah Mohamad does not see public scepticism linking her appointment with her husband's political background as a challenge.

"Actually all of that is behind me now because I am now concentrating fully on my task and I think I have a lot to deliver to the rakyat," she told reporters after a closed-door lecture at Universiti Islam Antarabangsa (UIA) in Gombak today.

Madinah was responding to a question on whether she found it challenging to address sceptics who had connected her appointment as the chief of the National Audit Department with her Umno leader husband.

Upon her appointment in February, critics had questioned her lack of credentials in finance and accounting, as well as her political affiliations.

Madinah is a member of the Kepong Umno division, which is led by her husband, Rizuan Abdul Hamid.

Rizuan had told the Umno general assembly in 2015 that he was willing to "die" for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

It was also established that Najib once attempted to intervene when Rizuan was about to be declared a bankrupt.

Earlier, Madinah thanked the government when asked for comment on her appointment as the country's first female auditor-general.

"It is a challenging task, of which I am up to it. And I have the support of all my officers in the National Audit Department and I look forward to presenting my first report in Parliament," she said.

The new auditor-general also found the first two months of her latest job stint as "very enriching".

"I have also utilised all my experience as former secretary-general of the Science, Innovation and Technology Ministry (Mosti) and also Ministry of Education. It has helped me in good stead."

Asked whether there were plans to declassify the auditor-general's report on 1MDB, Madinah just smiled and walked away.

"Thank you. Thank you so much for waiting," said Madinah as she turned back to face the media practitioners who had waited for her after being told that the event was a closed-door programme.

The long-awaited auditor-general's report on 1MDB continues to be classified under the Official Secrets Act (OSA).
