Selangor DAP central committee member Edry Faizal Eddy Yusof has lodged a police report over the death threats made against him on an anti-DAP Facebook page.

In a statement today, he said differences in opinion are part of a healthy democracy, but not when it leads to extremists conjuring falsehoods and threatening a person’s safety.

“We celebrate the freedom to hold differing opinions as long as it is not extreme to the extent of slandering and threatening the safety of another individual.

“I am confident that each Malaysian wants a life that is good and peaceful. The culture of thuggish politics, slander, and violent intimidation only worsens the poor conditions in our country.

“Such bad culture should be put to a stop,” he said, while expressing hope that the law would be upheld.

The police report was lodged at the Dang Wangi police district headquarters this afternoon, a copy of which was supplied to Malaysiakini.

The report was made over a posting on the Facebook page “DAP Laknatullah” (Allah damns DAP), which was published yesterday evening.

The post claimed that Edry had said that the May 13, 1969 racial riots were a mere fairy tale that should be forgotten by the youths, and that DAP had not been involved in the incident.

Referring to Edry as a “DAP dog”, the post stated that if the May 13 incident were to recur, he should be “sought, lynched, and roasted alive”.

“And then we can say that DAP is not involved and should be forgotten,” it said. A check by Malaysiakini showed that the post is still public as of 4.30pm today.

In his police report, Edry said he had never made such remarks about the May 13 incident, and believes that this is slander aimed against him and DAP.

He urged the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to investigate and act against the alleged slander and death threats.
