A magistrate’s court in Kuala Lumpur today acquitted two Perak assemblypersons and four others on a charge of obstructing a Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) officer from carrying out his duties in March 2015.

Magistrate Nur A'Minahtul Mardiah Md Nor made this decision after both sides, the prosecution and the defence, presented their submissions earlier today.

In making her decision to free the six accused, Nur A'Minahtul Mardiah said the defence had presented reasonable doubt in the prosecution's case.

Simpang Pulai assemblyperson Tan Kar Hing and Teja assemblyperson Chang Lih Kang, together with Chee Chu Sang, N. Tamilarason, Yong Ming Chong and Gan Zhi Mou were on March 30, 2015, charged with preventing Mohd Haryadi Mohd Nor and his team from carrying out their duties.

The crowd within the courtroom burst into applause when the magistrate read out her decision.

Chang later said outside the courtroom that he was happy, relieved and grateful for everybody's support.

The six of them had been charged with deliberately obstructing the DBKL officer and his team from enforcing their duties near Dang Wangi on March 27, 2015, during the #KitaLawan rally.

The charge under Section 186 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same code, carries a jail term of not more than two years and a maximum fine of RM10,000, or both, upon conviction.

Chee had also been charged under Section 353, for allegedly using criminal force to stop another DBKL officer, Mat Fuad Yusoff, from carrying out his duties, at the same place, time and date.

This offence carries a two-year jail term or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
