Umno vs Bersatu youth; Dr M promises to keep PM powers in check

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you have missed from yesterday, in brief.

Umno vs Bersatu youth

Tempers flared when some 100 Umno Youth members confronted a Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) Youth wing delegation at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.

The Bersatu Youth delegation wanted to submit an invitation for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to debate with their chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad at the "Nothing to Hide 2.0" forum.

Meanwhile, Umno Youth urged Mahathir to own up to his "wrongdoings" when he was PM, including allowing government bailouts of "crony" firms.

In a related matter, Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi rebutted a US Embassy report that Malaysia jails political dissidents, noting that political arrests only happened during Mahathir's 22-year premiership.

Saari Sungib, who resigned as head of Otai Reformasi, the group of Reformasi era veterans, said while he will not kiss or greet Mahathir, the ex-PM remains a crucial player in the current political scenario.

Dr M: Harapan will keep PM powers in check

Mahathir who is now Pakatan Harapan chairperson said the opposition coalition will find ways to keep PM's powers in check if it wins the next general election, including imposing a two-term limit.

Meanwhile, as part of its 14th general elections manifesto, Harapan Youth pledged to offer one million jobs within the first five years should the coalition take over Putrajaya - starting with a systematic reduction of the country’s current dependency on cheap foreign labour.

Other Kinibites

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's speech at the annual Invest Malaysia event to court foreign investors took an unusual political turn when he started attacking the opposition for what he claims is a concerted effort to damage the economy.

Gerakan secretary-general Liang Teck Meng filed a defamation suit against Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng for Lim's remarks on sale of reclamation land by the Gerakan-led Penang government before 2008, but Lim questioned if it is possible to file a lawsuit claiming a government was defamed.

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said the abduction of pastor Raymond Koh on Feb 13 was linked to a suspected drugs and arm smuggling group in southern Thailand. Police killed a member of the group in a shootout last month.

DAP's Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching rubbished the oral reply given by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Azalina Othman to a question on the cost of Permata's events in London, since the minister listed the programme's benefits but not the cost.

Looking ahead

A businessman with the title of "Tan Sri" is expected to be charged with corruption today.

Bersatu's supreme council will hold a press conference after its meeting this afternoon.
