Consultant with Master's degree jailed for theft, impersonating cop

A development consultant with a Master’s degree in Islamic Studies was sentenced to two years’ jail and fined RM1,000 by the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court today after he pleaded guilty to three offences, including impersonating a policeman.

Judge Shamsudin Abdullah sentenced Azmin Disa, 36, for stealing a handphone belonging to one Muhammad Najmi Mohd Faudzi, 26.

The offence, under Section 380 of the Penal Code, provides an imprisonment for up to 10 years and is liable to fine, upon conviction.

Shamsuddin also sentenced Azmin to one year jail for impersonating a policeman by checking and ransacking Muhammad Najmi’s belongings and another year’s jail for trespassing.

Azmin, who has two children, was charged with committing all the three offences at  Blok D, PPR Intan Baiduri, Kepong, at about 9 am last Feb 12.

However, he was ordered to serve the jail sentences concurrently from the date of his arrest, which was last Feb 18.

In mitigation, Azmin, represented by lawyer Syed Muhammad Adeeb Barakbah, said his client had a family to support.

Deputy public prosecutor Kamarul Aris Kamalluddin prosecuted.
