More than 30 opposition lawmakers marched from Parliament to Bank Negara to petition governor Muhammad Ibrahim to reopen its investigation into the 1MDB scandal in light of new developments.

Leading the pack were opposition leader and PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Gelang Patah MP Lim Kit Siang, Bagan MP Lim Guan Eng and Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad.

Holding up paper cutouts of "pink diamond" and a large red banner stating "Sayangi Malaysia Hapus Kleptokrasi" (Love Malaysia Destroy Kleptocracy), they marched for about 30 minutes through traffic.

The “pink diamond” cutouts were related to the latest United States Department civil forfeiture suit concerning 1MDB.

The DOJ had alleged that businessman Jho Low had acquired a 22-carat pink diamond necklace valued at US$27.3 million for the wife of Malaysian Official 1 (MO1) using 1MDB funds.

Previously, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Abdul Rahman Dahlan had confirmed that MO1 was Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

However, he said since the DOJ suits did not name the prime minister, he is not being investigated.

Najib has denied abusing public funds for personal gain. He has also been cleared of any wrongdoing by attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali.

Meanwhile, Guan Eng said the opposition had resorted to a march because the coalition had exhausted all other channels.

"Bank Negara is the only institution with a shred of reputation left.

"(Former governor) Zeti Akthar Aziz has said she did whatever she could do. So we want the new governor to look at 1MDB again, there should be a fresh inquiry into it.

"1MDB is the biggest scandal in the world, Bank Negara can't just hold their arms akimbo and twiddle their thumbs. It will tarnish their image if no action is taken," he added.

Later, 10 representatives were allowed into the Bank Negara compound to hand over their memorandum to the bank's head of contact centre Mazlan Ariffin and deputy director of strategic communications Lee Poh Kong.

However, Wan Azizah said the MPs could not meet Muhammad Ibrahim as "he was in an important meeting".

Reading from a copy of the memorandum, she outlined a list of 1MDB-linked transactions which needed attention from Bank Negara.

"Bank Negara needs to be neutral and independent, it cannot take sides," she said.

She added that 1MDB's failure to pay RM2.58 billion to International Petroleum Investment Co (IPIC) on Tuesday had "destroyed the integrity of Malaysia's financial system".
