The prime minister's wife Rosmah Mansor is glad that the special criminal court for sexual crimes against children is up and running.

This was in light of the case of a father facing 626 charges for allegedly raping and sodomising his now 15-year-old daughter for two years, on a routine basis.

"That is why we have the court for sexual crimes against children.

"I feel this is one of the best ways to ensure that the wrongdoer is punished by the courts.

"I am thankful that the victims, who are children, receive protection from the government and especially the courts," she told journalists while attending a high tea function for a women's magazine in Kuala Lumpur today.

Rosmah was asked to respond to the case, which took two days to register and for the charges to be read out due to the sheer volume.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak officiated the special criminal court for sexual crimes against children on June 22.

Rosmah was present during the launch, where she officiated a special waiting room for child witnesses.

Meanwhile, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Rohani Abdul Karim, who was also present at the high-tea, expected the maximum sentence in the case.

"A fair judge would impose the maximum (sentence), but I feel even that would not be enough for what he had done," she said.
