PKR plans 'welcome' for Najib; Isa Samad faces more raids

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

PKR plans 'welcome' for Najib

PKR plans to hold a flash mob to greet Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's arrival in Permatang Pauh today, the party's stronghold.

Ilham Centre’s executive director Hisommuddin Bakar said preliminary field work suggests Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) is struggling to convert dissent in Felda to its favour.

A separate survey by Invoke's Centre for Policy Initiatives said Najib's feel-good policies have failed to alter the pessimistic view of the economy amongst the wider population.

PAS leaders dismissed speculations that the party's state leadership in Kedah, Kelantan and Selangor may seek autonomy to work with Pakatan Harapan.

Kelantan PKR announced that it will retain all its political appointed positions in the PAS-led Kelantan government.

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man called for a Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Memali incident.

Isa Samad faces more raids

Another of former Felda Global Ventures Holdings (FGV) chairperson Mohd Isa Samad's homes was raided by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), this time in Nilai.

However, the MACC said it had not frozen any of Isa's assets.

Isa was remanded for five days to facilitate investigation into Felda Investment Corporation's (FIC) purchase of hotels, allegedly at inflated prices.

DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang questioned if Isa's arrest was merely hype as the government under former prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had also promised to act against 18 "sharks" but it never materialised.

PKR vice president Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin urged the government to follow up by ensuring that charges are brought against Isa.

IGP explains police absence during forum fracas

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said cops did not provide security during the Nothing to Hide 2.0 event as no requests were made by the organiser.

Khalid said he will wait for the court's decision in relation to Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali's judicial review action trying to compel the top cop to extradite Penang-born businessperson Low Taek Jho over the 1MDB scandal.

He also warned the atheist community not to cause unease among Muslims.

Political cartoonist Zunar filed a suit against Khalid and the government over what he claimed was the illegal seizure of his works.

Other Kini bites

Malaysian Human Rights Commission chairperson Razali Ismail said the Ayer Molek lockup in Johor Baru was in a deplorable state that even police officers had contracted tuberculosis from sick detainees.

Petrol price increased for the fourth consecutive week, with RON95 going up to three sen and RON97 going up by four sen, bringing the new retail prices to RM2.15 per litre and RM2.43 per litre respectively.

Gerakan alleged the illegal factory in Sungai Lembu was not only able to maintain its premises but also purportedly expanded under the watch of the DAP-led Penang government based on satellite images.

Police questioned activists Ivy Josiah and Ho Yock Lin over the "Walk for Maria" protest, nine months after it took place.

The Australian reported that Malaysian fugitive cop Sirul Azhar Umar made an appeal to Australian authorities not to reject his application for a protection visa as he would be executed if deported to Malaysia.

Looking ahead

The Kuala Lumpur High Court will decide on the government's objection against former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's application to recuse two members of the RCI on the forex scandal.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak will be on a whirlwind visit in Penang, including PKR's stronghold of Permatang Pauh.
