Preacher Wan Ji Wan Husin was freed from detention today after police were unable to secure a remand extension.
"The application to extend Wan Ji's remand for three more days was rejected by the magistrate," said Zulhazmi Shariff, who acted as Wan Ji's lawyer.
Wan Ji, who is also an information officer attached to the Penang Chief Minister's Office, was released at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters.
He was arrested in Penang on Friday, under the Sedition Act 1954, for allegedly insulting the royalty.
He was subsequently transferred to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters, which is investigating the matter.
Wan Ji was remanded for two days, which expired today.
