INTERVIEW | MyPPP president M Kayveas believes that the Indian community’s support will swing back to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak in the upcoming general election.

But if that does not happen, Kayveas said it would be the fault of the leaders the prime minister has entrusted to work with the Indian community.

“I think the Indian community will support BN fully, or much more than what it was before because Najib has paid extremely full attention to the Indian community.

“If the results are not there (in BN’s favour), it is not his (Najib's) fault, it is the people below him or the people he trusted to perform...

“For him, I think the Indians would give him full support... because of his kindness to the Indian community which was on the verge of being completely left out,” the 63-year-old told Malaysiakini in an interview.

Earlier this year, Najib launched the Malaysian Indian Blueprint (MIB), a 10-year plan to empower the Indian community in the country.

The blueprint is said to contain solutions and specific policies to target key issues affecting the community.

However, there are those who are skeptical of the blueprint and how effective it will be, including the opposition which described the MIB as a propaganda tool for the 14th general election.

Kayveas, who has served under three prime ministers, also said Najib’s administration is facing an especially challenging time due to the weakening of the global economy and local currency, as well as mounting pressure from the opposition.

Despite all that, he said Najib has done a good job coping with these challenges, pointing to the development of the MRT and expansion of the LRT, as well as the proliferation of urban transformation centres (UTC).

“With all these challenges, if you look at the infrastructure and social structure, they are improving.

“I think he is doing well. He is performing well comparatively, (and) with the (challenging) times now, he is taking it very well,” he said.

Najib is also the kindest out of the three prime ministers, he said, adding that he has never seen the prime minister say no to anyone.

“On social media, people ask him how he managed to give help everywhere; it is Najib’s own effort,” Kayveas said.
