After tabling what he termed to be the "mother of all budgets", Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak is now gearing up for the 'mother of all elections".

"We have to do the work because the 14th general election (GE14) is going to be the mother of all elections," Najib said at Umno's national social media convention today.

"If we win it, insyaAllah, we will form a strong government.

"We have many goals for the country. The Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) project is just the start," he added.

He also noted how he had launched the digital free trade zone (DFTZ) yesterday.

In the upcoming polls, Najib said one of the main battlegrounds will be in cyberspace, a battle he said Umno had lost in both the 12th and 13th general elections.

"So in GE14, we must make sure that Umno-BN wins.

"I consider this as a very important effort, the most important effort because the 14th general election is very near," he said.

Handphones 'the main weapon'

Meanwhile, Najib lamented the lack of retweets and likes on his social media posts related to government policies.

"When I talk about the government's policies, the retweets and likes are around 300 or 400.

"If I tweet about football, it's 1,000, or 2,000 retweets or likes (and) if I tweet to announce public holidays, 10,000 to 12,000 will respond.

"There are 3,800 people in this hall but how many of you retweet about the government's policies?" he said.

Najib expressed hope that the audience would retweet his social media posts more often, starting from today.

The premier had earlier cited statistics from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) that Malaysians are among those who own the highest number of phones in the world.

"Most of us own more than two handphones. So don't ask (for handphones) from Umno," he joked.

Supreme council member Ahmad Maslan, who is also Umno's IT chief, had earlier stated that the main weapon in the 14th general election would be handphones.

"Who does not have smartphones, please ask from your respective division heads," said Ahmad to cheers from thousands of Umno members present at the hall today.
