Dr M barred from meeting Anwar; Penang tunnel project to go on

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Dr M barred from meeting Anwar

Pakatan Harapan chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad was barred from meeting de facto opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim at the Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital.

The Australian newspaper, in an editorial piece, commended both Mahathir and Anwar for their willingness to team up against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

In a Facebook Live session, Mahathir defended toll rates in Malaysia, saying it would be difficult to maintain the country’s highways without them.

This courted flak from Umno minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan, who said that Mahathir's justification goes against Harapan's earlier promise to abolish tolls.

In the same session, Mahathir also stressed that Harapan will not go on a " revenge" spree against BN ministers should they capture Putrajaya.

Penang tunnel project will go on

Despite an MACC crackdown, the Penang undersea tunnel project will go on barring a court order, said Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

Vertice Bhd, a company whose associate is involved in the project, echoed Lim’s remarks, saying that the scrutiny of the anti-graft commission will not impact the project's progress.

The director of a company said to be involved in the project was remanded for six days by MACC to facilitate investigations.

The commission also arrested two individuals with "datuk" titles in connection with the graft probe into the project.

The graft trial involving Lim in connection with the purchase of his bungalow will go on for 23 days, beginning March 26, at the High Court in Georgetown, Penang.

Other Kinibites

Amanah communications director Khalid Samad said Mahathir was chosen as Harapan's prime ministerial candidate in order to attract Malay votes.

Human rights group Suaram urged the Immigration Department to revoke its rule barring stateless children from attending public schools.

Malaysia signed an agreement with US-based seabed exploration company, Ocean Infinity, to begin a new search for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, which disappeared in 2014.

The Prime Minister's Office insisted that Najib's family members and guests, who accompanied the premier on his trip to Saudi Arabia, paid their own fares.

The Court of Appeal reversed a High Court decision to ban four books written by Faisal Tehrani, and found the Home Ministry to have violated the author's right to freedom of expression.
