Penang DAP committee member Jeffrey Chew Gim Eam went to the state police headquarters on Tuesday to give his statement in relation to a police report that was lodged over an anti-DAP video clip.

However, when Chew arrived at the police headquarters along Jalan Patani, he found himself detained instead.

"I just went there to give my statement after a police report was made about the video.

"But the police arrested me. I was taken in to get my fingerprints copied and my photo taken," he told Malaysiakini.

Chew, who is also deputy general manager of the Penang Development Corporation, said he was not shaken by the detention, and maintained that he did nothing to deserve the arrest.

"They let me go after two hours," he added, noting that also had his handphone seized by the police.

According to lawyer RSN Rayer, the police are investigating Chew under Section 4 of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Chew was detained after Penang Island City councillor Grace Teoh Koon Gee lodged a police report on a 59-second video clip on April 23.

'A vote for DAP'

The clip shows footage saying that a vote for PKR would be a vote for "racist DAP leaders, LGBT rights, nepotism and cronyism; foreign interference and the abolishment of bumiputera rights and monarchy."

Photos of Pakatan Harapan leaders, including its chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad, and foreigners such as George Soros, Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown and business tycoon Vincent Tan, were also featured in the video.

The footage then zooms onto the image of a ballot paper with an 'X' marked on the BN box. Earlier, the 'X' was marked in the PKR box.

According to Chew, police wanted to know who Teoh got the video from. 

He had been tasked with monitoring social media on fake news about Harapan, and sent the video to the DAP elections committee after viewing it. 

Rayer maintains that Chew is not a suspect. 

The lawyer and incumbent Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh also called on Teoh to lodge another police report.
