GE14 | It was a strange affair at Pahang BN's candidate list announcement today, with a threat from Pahang BN chief Adnan Yaakob to throw away someone's mobile phone, and his disappearance from the stage for two minutes.

At one point, Adnan also rummaged through his bag and wondered if he had lost the BN candidates' list.

The event began as planned, with the singing of the BN anthem, followed by Adnan who delivered his speech, which emphasised the coalition's achievements.

However, just over 10 minutes into the event, the BN anthem started to play again, except this time, it came from a mobile phone from somebody in the audience.

Annoyed at being interrupted, Adnan warned that he would throw the phone away.

"I'll throw that phone. I'm being frank. You just see. The television crew is still outside, if they are here, I'll come down (from the stage) and throw it away.

"I'm speaking here and all of the sudden there's the BN anthem," he said.

Adnan then lost his train of thought and asked: "Where was I?"

The caretaker Pahang menteri besar then decided he wanted some water.

"Where's the water? No one has water? Never mind, I'll go get it myself," he said.

Adnan then walked off, leaving those still on the stage, like MCA president Liow Tiong Lai, puzzled. The crowd also began to murmur.

Adnan returned to the stage some two minutes later, and joked that he would have made anyone who brought water to him an election candidate.

"But no one brought some for me," he said. He then continued with his speech about BN's contributions.

At one point, Adnan also addressed his long tenure as an assemblyperson and state menteri besar.

'I will retire gracefully'

"I'm entering my eighth term (as an assemblyperson). Some people say it can't be that he still wants to contest...

"It's been 32 years, so when the time comes, I will go gracefully. I will retire gracefully.

"When is the time? That is not for me to determine. Allah will decide," he said.

Adnan also repeatedly thanked incumbent assemblypersons who will be bowing out at the 14th general election.

However, when Adnan got to announcing the names of the candidates, he appeared to struggle with finding the candidates' list.

"Where did the list disappear?" he said after struggling to find it on stage for about 20 seconds, before declaring "Ah, it's here," as the crowd laughed.

In the announcement, Adnan confirmed that Umno will return the Kuantan parliamentary seat to MCA.

Umno president Najib Abdul Razak and Liow, as expected, will contest in Pekan and Bentong, respectively.

Adnan himself will defend the Pelangai state seat for the eighth term.

However, the candidate for Bukit Ibam state seat was not announced today, and will only be revealed at a later date.

Nomination day for the 14th general election is fixed on Saturday, while polling day will take place on May 9.
