GE14 | Following Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Najib Abdul Razak's respective final addresses before tomorrow's general election, former minister Rafidah Aziz, PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli and Bersatu strategist Rais Hussin said the choice facing voters is crystal clear.

“Redeeming our tarnished maruah (pride) is what needs to be a priority.

“Not bribing with goodies that the country can ill-afford and will be more burdensome for the rakyat,” said Rafidah in a brief text message to Malaysiakini before boarding a flight from Penang, where she had attended a Pakatan Harapan ceramah.

She was responding to the caretaker prime minister's announcement of a tax waiver, public holidays and toll-free highways if BN is returned to power.

'Najib still missing the point'

Meanwhile, Rafizi, who was also travelling in between ceramah, claimed that Najib had missed the point and continued to insult the public.

Describing tomorrow's contest as a choice between “pride and bribe,” the former Pandan lawmaker said raining goodies at this point would make no difference.

“For years we were treated as though we were bullied... Lies were told to us as if we could not think for ourselves.

“So the rakyat of all races are now determined to reclaim our honour. We have lost our nation's soul under Najib.

“This is why I believe Tun (Mahathir) hit the nail on the head with his speech. We cannot raise our children with pride as long as Najib is in power,” he told Malaysiakini.

In his speech from Langkawi, Mahathir had implored voters not to sell the pride and future of the nation for bribes, which would not last long.

'Feudalism vs democracy'

Rais, on the other hand, said the people must decide must between benefits promised for the purpose of a general election with continuous suffering, or more comprehensive solutions to alleviate fast escalating costs of living through the abolishment of GST.

He said voters, in Harapan, also have the choice to witness the reforming of democratic institutions to ensure good governance and the redemption of dignity for both Malaysia and Malaysians.

“Whether the people want to choose between continuous feudal existence or a working democracy with good governance?

“Whether an election front loaded goodies will once again lull Malaysians to continue with the current regime?

“Will the people succumb to the temptations or will they say 'Enough is enough. No more. We want to truly liberate Malaysia'..,” he told Malaysiakini.
