GE14 | PAS has no regrets staying out of Pakatan Harapan, even though the former opposition coalition has succeeded in wresting control of the federal government following a shocking 14th general election victory last Wednesday.

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said this was because the Islamic party has already been through many political challenges, so much so it can now stand on its own.

"We've never regretted (leaving the opposition) as we've been in the government (before), we've even been fired by the government.

"We have been through it all, we've lost and we've won.

"Falls and rises in politics are normal and always changing, friends become foes and enemies become friends, so that is why we cannot form friendships that go overboard and we cannot let out enmity go overboard," he said.

Abdul Hadi made the comments when speaking with reporters following the swearing in ceremony of the new Terengganu menteri besar and his exco at Istana Syarqiyyah, Terengganu last night.

He had been asked if PAS had any regrets not being a part of Harapan as the latter has taken Putrajaya and can now form the new Malaysian government.

PAS had been part of the then Pakatan Rakyat coalition but divisions within the party saw splinter group Amanah being formed and joining the new Pakatan Harapan, while the PAS vowed to go it alone.

It was also part of the then-ruling Barisan National government in the 70s.

In a major upset at the polls, Dr Mahathir-led Harapan wrested Putrajaya after winning a combined 122 our of 222 parliament seats, forming a simple majority.

This is the first time the country will see a change in government in 61 years, since independence in 1957.

Meanwhile, Abdul Hadi also reminded the new government not to repeat the actions of BN by sidelining Kelantan and Terengganu when it comes to central allocations.

"It's in the constitution and the central government must honour the constitution. The agreement is there and all this while they (the BN government) did not respect the constitution and we hope this isn't repeated.

"(Matters) such as seizure of royalty (and) interference in state affairs," he added when commenting on how PAS should work with the Harapan government to enable allocations in the PAS-controlled states be channeled to them without any discrimination.
