MCA president Liow Tiong Lai said his party would initiate a review of its position within the BN coalition.
This was after the MCA was nearly wiped out in the May 9 general election, winning one parliamentary and two state seats.
"MCA called for a central committee discussion today to review the results of the just-concluded 14th general election.
"Meanwhile, the party also seeks to discuss the future political direction of MCA. A post-mortem will be held on another day to explore on issues including MCA's position in BN and the way forward," he said in a statement.
Liow, who lost his Bentong parliamentary seat in the May 9 polls, said he will also not defend his presidency in the upcoming MCA election.
"Looking forward, the central committee will initiate the party’s election process in accordance with the party’s Constitution, so that a new leadership can be formed.
"Therefore, I formally announce that I will not seek re-election as MCA president in the coming party election to be responsible to others.
"The central committee accepted my wishes today," he said.
He added that MCA will also formulate plans to strengthen the party's reforms.
Monitoring new gov't
Liow said MCA will play its role as an opposition party and monitor the new government.
"The founding and growth of MCA comes from the people, and MCA will not hesitate to check and balance the authorities concerned for anything related to the interests and well-being of the people," he said.
Liow also congratulated Pakatan Harapan chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad's for being sworn in as the seventh prime minister.
"The people have made their decisions during the general election. MCA fully respects that and hopes the newly-minted government will fulfil its responsibility faithfully," he said.
