Malaysians should have faith in the Council of Eminent Persons advising the government on reforms and resolving scandals, billionaire Robert Kuok said today.

The Hong Kong-based tycoon, who is a member of the council, stated that although he cannot attend the meetings on a regular basis, he is confident the others are more than capable of doing the work entrusted to them.

"They comprise very, very fine Malaysians. I happen to be living in Hong Kong so I can't attend too often.

"But (former finance minister) Daim Zainuddin, (former Bank Negara governor) Zeti Akhtar Aziz, (former Petronas president) Hassan Merican and (economist) Jomo Kwame Sundaram are excellent people. Trust them," he told reporters.

Kuok, who turns 95 this year, appeared frail as he left Menara Ilham in Kuala Lumpur after the council's meeting this evening.

Quizzed on his views regarding the new government, the businessperson, who is Malaysia's richest person, said everyone wishes the best for the country.

"All of us wish our country well. We hope the people, especially the rakyat, are taken care of," he added.

This is the first time Kuok has attended the council's meeting since its inception on May 12 by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
